SpotOn, Sales Executive Temple Phipps

Describe what your organization provides for its customers:
At SpotOn, we create innovative software and payment solutions for businesses of all types, from restaurants to retail businesses and the service industry. Backed by 24/7 in-person service & support, our technology platform offers end-to-end digital solutions that make it easier than ever before to run and grow a business .Our mission is to empower merchants with powerful and easy-to-use tools to get paid fast, grow revenue, and boost efficiency, backed by concierge-style customer service and support

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique:
SpotOn was founded as a digital loyalty and marketing software platform for small and medium businesses to make meaningful connections with their customers and drive revenue growth. In 2017, we integrated payment processing into our platform, the first step in creating an end-to-end solution for businesses of all types. In 2018, SpotOn acquired EmaginePOS to deliver a best-in-class point-of-sale system to restaurants and bars nationwide. This was followed by the acquisition of Lifeyo in 2019, giving businesses access to affordable custom websites. In 2020, SpotOn acquired SeatNinja to deliver the premier reservation and wait listing solution to the hospitality industry, to thrive during the COVID-19 business paradigm and beyond.

Founded by Zachary Hyman, Matt Hyman, and Doron Friedman, SpotOn is the culmination of their long term vision to redefine the merchant service industry by empowering business operators with the tools and service they deserve at a price that puts money back in their pocket. I , Temple Phipps first came to know the company 2 years ago when I became a customer through Wine On Main. As a small business owner, I was so impressed by their business practices, products and services. I found myself talking about how they could help other businesses in the community and am now a full time employee.

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
SpotOn’s new contact tracing software in response to Covid-19 compliance requirements comes on the tails of its $60 million Series C fundraise led by DST Global in September, as well as its acquisition of leading reservation management software provider SeatNinja in August.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
For me personally, I hope to ensure that as many local businesses as possible are aware of how SpotOn can help their business to survive and thrive during these trying times and recognize the value of our commitment to merchant's needs. SpotOn will continue to expand it's products and services in order to support these efforts. I am passionate about what I do and making sure that my merchant partners have the best solution for their business.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
Dream big and DO IT! I have always wanted to open a practice but was hesitant to do it. With the support of those I love and community resources like the Clayton Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses, I was able to achieve my goals.

Your Marketing Page, Founded 2017 - Tony Molinaro

Describe what your organization provides for its customers:
We like to consider ourselves a "Boutique Marketing Company", big enough to make a difference and small enough to provide that personal touch. We specialize in website design, Marketing Pages, lead generation, digital marketing and advertising.

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique:
As Internet Marketers for over 20 years, we understand the struggles when it comes to building a successful business. Our recommendation for anyone who is a real estate agent or in network marketing is to stop using your corporate website! Too many times individuals promote a company's corporate website and wind up losing sales. A personalized landing page or what we like to referrer them as a “Marketing Page” is a must have for anyone in business today, especially if you are a real estate agent or in network marketing. Customers are searching “you” online - not the corporation. Believe it or not, there are 3.5 billion searches on Google per day. Someone online is searching for your exact service. Guess who’s getting their business?

People who visit your website expect immediate gratification, which means visitors should be able to answer 3 questions within 3 seconds of landing on your website: Who are you? - What do you do/offer? - How do I contact you?

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
Joining the Clayton Chamber Of Commerce. Late last year we became members of the CCOC and our goal this year is to participate and be more active within the community.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
This year we are planing on growing our business and clientele by 25% and also be able to add more marketing solutions for our clients.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
Starting a business takes time. Lots of people dream about being an entrepreneur or having their own business but don't give it enough time or they run out of money. I remember when we opened our first restaurant, we had enough money in the bank to pay for all our expenses just in case we did not get a customer for 6 months. MY recommendations for new business owners are:
  • Learn everything about your business
  • Ask advice from friends, family or experts in the line of business
  • Get a part time job at a business similar to what you plan on launching
  • Be the solution, everyone needs help with something today
  • Purchase your unique Domain Name for your business and LOCK IN all the social media channels of your business name.
  • Tell EVERYBODY about your new business

The Pines at Glen Laurel, Community Manager - Jimmy Stine

Describe what your organization provides for its customers
We provide Clayton with upscale luxury apartments in a prime location along with a fabulous set of amenities.

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique
The Pines at Glen Laurel were built in 2019, and is the first multi-use community of its kind in Clayton. This will provide residents with a luxury apartment home, as well as the convenience of shopping and dining without leaving the community. Residents have 24 hour access to our amenities such as the swimming pool, Pub Room, and state of the art fitness center.

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
We have recently stabilized our occupancy after being open for a year, and we plan to break ground on a new phase later this year which will add 120 apartments to the community. We are also working on deals for the commercial and retail parcels that are available. The State Employees Credit Union is near completion, and we are working on a Mexican restaurant that will open later this year.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
We hope to see the community fully occupied, and look forward to many more commercial and retail opportunities on the property. We look forward to offering more shopping and dining to not only our residents, but the residents of East Clayton as the area continues to grow and prosper!

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
Do as much market research as possible for trends in your area, as well as trends in several of the surrounding cities. Focus groups are a great source of insight as to what customers are looking for in this new day and age. Work closely with the Chamber of Commerce as they prove to be a valuable resource for networking and advertising. Beyond anything, customer service is key!!

Fairway Mortgage, Mortgage Advisor - Shawna Clark

Describe what your organization provides for its customers
I help people achieve the dream of home ownership. I work with a full range of clients, from first time home buyers to buyers wanting to purchase investment properties and refinance their current home.

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique
I became a Mortgage Advisor in 2018 because I wanted to help people achieve the dream of home ownership. Owning a home is a major step toward building wealth and it can be achieved as long as there is an understanding of what it takes to get there. Many of my clients are first time home buyers and are unfamiliar with the process and requirements to get approved for a home loan. To help with this I host several Home Buyer Seminars throughout the year. The seminars provide future buyers the opportunity to learn the process and get their questions answered in a relaxed environment. I partner with other industry professionals for the seminar to provide insight on the entire home buying process.

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
In the last couple of months I have been able to help families use the equity in their home to consolidate debt.  Eliminating hundreds of dollars from their monthly expenses gives them the opportunity to breath and live more comfortably. It is rewarding for me knowing that I helped make a difference for them.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
In the next 12 months, I hope to continue to be a resource in regards to if now is time to buy or refinance a home.  For many families using the equity in their home may be the best option to consolidate debt, do renovations or invest in rental property. I look forward to helping them understand their options and how they can use what they have to get what they want.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
Get involved in the community. Clayton is a wonderful place to be a small business owner. It’s filled with opportunity and support you just have to get out there and get involved. Find a mentor or coach. You don’t have to navigate things on your own.

We hope that Hudson’s will continuing to grow with the great support of our many customers and friends.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
The best advice I can provide is to put considerable effort into a 10-year plan and have twice the cash available that your plan indicates.  Invest in people that share your vision and will take ownership of their position.

Angelina Corroo - HomeTowne Realty

Describe what your organization provides for its customers:
As a Full-time REALTOR® I serve the Greater Triangle area and have a wide range of expertise from new construction to resales, and first-time home buyers to investment properties. I am a top producing agent and I know how to get results. A lot of times that means doing things that other agents won't do, like paying for repairs, or even doing the repairs myself, cleaning, painting, helping clients move; whatever it takes.

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique:

I am passionate about real estate, helping others, and serving my community. My most rewarding work in real estate has been helping those going through a life change – whether that is a relocation, a new job, marriage, divorce, or death in the family – I have lots of experience dealing with these very challenging situations and I welcome the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. I have also been coaching people on becoming investors and landlords and how to create an investment portfolio. I believe that real estate can be an extraordinary investment with very little risk if you know what you’re doing.

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
This year I have been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, as well as the NC REALTORS® Housing Foundation. Serving my community and finding meaningful ways to give back is becoming a focus of mine. Availability of affordable housing is an issue in our area, and I want to help solve that problem, in addition to supporting my fellow local business owners who provide jobs for our residents. Clayton is such a special place to live and we want to continue to attract more businesses and newcomers here, while preserving our small-town quality of life.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
My husband and I have been investing in rental properties as part of our retirement strategy, and this year we plan to purchase our 5th one. We open the doors to our rentals to people who may not be able to find a nice home to rent otherwise - due to having low credit scores, large dogs, etc. I also plan to earn my Workforce Housing Specialist Designation and increase awareness of the support that is available to the aspiring homeowners in our community.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
My best advice is a quote from Jim Rohn – “Don’t wish it was easier - wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems - wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge - wish for more wisdom.” And then go out and make yourself better - get the wisdom and skills that it takes and don’t let anyone stop you!

Diversified Payroll Solutions is a family-owned business with a home base in Pennsylvania, but we expanded to Clayton, NC in December of last year. We are always doing training with our payroll specialists to ensure our clients have the most up to date services. Having four payroll specialists and three accountants on hand here in Clayton, each client is getting a personal experience, direct contact and a knowledge base to help ensure your payroll service is running smoothly.

What is the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
Expanding! When I was given the opportunity to move to North Carolina with my fiancé, the owners have also gave me the opportunity to take the business with me. Being here in Clayton for about one year has been so rewarding.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
We hope that in the next year we can continue to expand and help more local businesses with their payroll needs. With our knowledge and services, we want to allow businesses to focus on their bottom line and not worry about the next payroll submission.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?

Patience and confidence. While I have 13 years of experience in payroll and 11 of those years with Diversified Payroll Solutions, starting in a new area can be frightening. Always lean back on your knowledge and expertise and the rest will fall into place!

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
My advice to others starting their own small business is to have a burning desire to drive you and be committed to consistently pursuing your dreams. Remove doubts and naysayers from your path. Be open to possibility. Always persevere. If you can think it, you can have it. When you become who you were meant to be, you'll set the world on fire.
